Paul Armitage
Originally from Yorkshire, Paul Armitage has lived and painted in Cornwall since 2001. During this time he has moved steadily away from abstract imagery towards the landscape - in partricular the land and seascapes of West Cornwall, which form his predominant inspiration and focus his explorative mind and interests in line, shape and nature. Encouraged by a number of years as studio assistant to Sandra Blow in St Ives, his device of tilting topographic perspective to the picture plane and shaping his supports into irregular off-square formats effectively "draw attention to the painting as architectonic object rather than as window on the world". Within these images, the paint is stripped away and built up like erosion and deposition. Cracks and fissures, displacements and fault lines all allow glimpses below the surface; a physical representation of what he sees within his subject matter. Armitage says of his work on display at the Roundhouse: "These are studio based paintings which echo forms I see in the landscape: hillsides, quarries, hilltop farms and small settlements; views from the sea and towards the sea. What to me is the essence of West Penwith often with buried layers of the past imagined, resurfacing." Armitage achieved first class BA(Hons) and an MA in Fine Art before turning his hand to teaching. He was the painting tutor for the Foundation Art Course at Basingstoke College of Technology. He worked with Sandra Blow, RA, until her death in 2006.

There are a number of paintings, especially the larger ones, that we don't have room to display in the gallery, but keep them in our store. Please contact the gallery to arrange a viewing.
